Calling it a "game-changer" for downtown development, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn says the city will receive an $11 million federal grant to finish the Riverwalk.
The walkway along the Hillsborough River has come a long way in recent years, with the addition of the Tampa Art Museum, Glazer Children's Museum and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.
But the pathway was broken in two parts, with a big gap in the middle.
The Tampa Bay Times reports the transportation grant will extend the Riverwalk from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park south to connect with the existing Riverwalk past the Sheraton Hotel.
"This has been a priority for the city for 15 years," Buckhorn told the Tampa Bay Times. "It has been my priority. It is a game-changer in terms of downtown development. This is a great day for Tampa."
Construction is expected to start soon. Buckhorn says plans are complete and the project is "truly shovel-ready."
