The Tampa Bay Rays have made the Forbes list -- but not in a Bill Gates sort of way.
For the second straight year, the Rays rank at the bottom of Forbes.com's list of the most valuable Major League Baseball teams.
Read it and weep:
- New York Yankees (worth $2.3 billion)
- Los Angeles ($1.6 billion)
- Boston Red Sox ($1.3 billion)
- Miami Marlins ($520 million)
- Kansas City Royals ($457 million)
- Tampa Bay Rays ($451 million)
The rankings take into account each team's revenue, operating income and debt. The Rays' value actually increased by 40 percent from last year, but it wasn't enough to tip the scales. According to Forbes, the average MLB team is worth $744 million -- up 23 percent from last year and the largest increase since 1998 when the mag started -- er, keeping score of such things.
To some baseball experts however, the Rays' on-field value is much higher -- the new issue of Sports Illustrated predicts the Rays will make the 2013 World Series, where they'll fall to the Washington Nationals (14th most valuable franchise at $631 million).
