St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is receiving nearly $20 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program.
Airport spokeswoman Michele Routh said the money will go toward restoring the main runway, which is used by the Coast Guard, corporate aviation, and commercial airlines.
“How it benefits is that that entire runway, it gets rehabilitated so that it has another 10 to 15 years of useful life on it, so, economic impact is huge based on the the runway dependent activity," she said.
Routh said the airport has a $1.4 billion economic impact in the area.
The project is due to be completed by early 2021.
St. Pete-Clearwater International was one of 16 airports in Florida to receive FAA grant funding.
