On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Called a “dream group” by The New York Times after just one concert, the ensemble Owls brings together members of Kronos Quartet and acclaimed soloists. Their debut album Rare Birds is built on joy, curiosity, and experimentation — ending with a 14-minute celebration of minimalism and 5/4 rhythm by Terry Riley. Then: A single chord for viola grew into something unexpected for composer Karin Rehnqvist — a piano improvisation, then an electronic voice that sounded like the sea. In her piece “I thought the sea would sing to me,” she explores the viola’s depths, from the warmth of the C string to shimmering quarter tones and playful musical gestures.

On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Some events seem to happen by chance — but still leave a lasting impact, from moment to moment, measure to measure. That idea is at the heart of Marc Mellits’ “Discrete Structures,” a set of miniature movements that connect and complete each other in surprising ways, drawn from shared musical material and personal moments of serendipity. Then: The trombone is often cast as the Big Bad Wolf or the Clown. But in Jonathan Dove’s “Stargazer,” it becomes something else entirely — a stargazer, searching the night sky while the orchestra shimmers around it, with subtle threads of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star woven throughout.
  • On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline, it’s music that evokes the imagery of red-tinged hues running across the sky, with a work by Angela Elizabeth Slater titled “Unraveling the Crimson Sky.” It’s music that moves through explosions of orchestral color, offering both moments of introspection and strident thematic material. Then: If you are a fan of the band Radiohead, you may recognize the name Jonny Greenwood as the band’s longtime lead guitarist. What you might not know is he has composed extensively for the orchestra as well as film scores. On the next Modern Notebook, we’ll hear a piece by Greenwood titled “Popcorn Superhet Receiver,” which explores a variety of unusual string sounds.
  • On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Growing up, composer Daniel de Togni would often spend summers in the Northern Italian region of Veneto, where he would visit his relatives and friends. Many years later, as an adult, he would return there - and the journey of traveling across time would inspire his work “Postcards from Veneto,” featured on this week’s program. Then: “Outshifts” is a word used to describe the fringes and boundaries of a town, and it’s found in Robert Macfarlane’s list of forgotten words - a list that is essentially a metaphor for the natural world being lost in favor of evolving technology. It’s also the name of this piece by Emily Hall composed for violin and vocoder, in which the vocoder represents that man made ‘city glow’ and the violin represents nature.
  • On this week’s Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: As a composer, Vivian Fung seeks to address different artistic challenges in her work, often highlighting issues of her Asian identity. That’s the case with her String Quartet No. 2, which uses a Chinese folksong as the basis of several sections of the piece. Then: Love, loss, and what we carry from those who leave us behind: these are the themes of four poems by Neil Aitken, set to music by Juhi Bansal in a piece titled “The Lost Country of Sight. It’s music and poetry that, in the composer’s words, portrays the cyclical nature of life and relationships, a look at the exile of body back to earth.
  • It’s a Modern Notebook gift as Tyler Kline shares a mix of new works inspired by peace, light, and the Advent. Enjoy a collection of contemporary works for voice that expands the rich tradition of choral music for the Holiday season with music by Owain Park, Sungji Hong, Joanna Forbes L'Estrange, and others. Then, it's solo piano music by Kimberly R. Osberg titled "Peace by Piece,” which is a musical choose-your-own-adventure for both listener and performer that evokes a gentle, wintry land; and Dai Fujikura's "Ghost of Christmas."
  • As we enter the longest nights of the year, Tyler Kline celebrates with a special Modern Notebook highlighting works inspired by the Winter Solstice and beginning of the Winter season.Featuring a work by Greenlandic composer Arnannguaq Gerstrom titled "Ukioq," which means "winter" in the Inuit language. Plus, Monty Adkins' "Winter Tendrils," which comes from the image of freshly fallen snow on the fragile bare branches of a tree. And others inspired by the Solstice, including Anna Meredith, Melissa Hui, and Lou Harrison.
  • There is a certain stillness on a cold, clear night when the stars are shining brightly, that captures the feeling of the winter season. On a special Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline, listen for music inspired by starry skies and still moments, including a solo piano work by Chris Opperman titled "Underneath the Starlit Skies;" works by David Liptak and Emma O'Halloran inspired by constellations; and a work by Kenji Bunch that draws its inspiration from the Las Posadas holiday celebrated each year in December in the Southwestern United States.
  • On a special Modern Notebook, join Tyler Kline as he gets ready for winter with a program of music inspired by the colder weather this time of year. Tune in for works by composers Shuying Li and Elena Langer inspired by snowfall; and some icier music from Nicky Sohn that asks, "What Happens When Pipes Burst?" Plus some particular chilly pieces by Alex Dowling for auto-tuned voices, and Mette Nielsen for string quartet.
  • On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: In the later stages of the COVID 19 pandemic, composer Paul Novak was thinking alot about the isolation many musicians felt during this difficult time: that there has been collective trauma in isolation, but also, challenges in finding new ways to connect. His work “a string quartet is like a flock of birds” grapples with these questions, with the players musically - and metaphorically - attempting to find each other. And we’ll conclude our series of conversations with composers from the inaugural Suncoast Composer Fellowship Program. This week, we’ll hear from composers Claire Hu and Nick Bentz about their work and careers, and listen to a piece by each of them performed at SCFP.
  • Coming up on this week’s Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline, we’ll hear new music from violinist Rakhi Singh, as well as pieces by Daniel Kidane and Jonathan Bailey Holland. Plus, solo harp music by Molly Joyce titled “Embodiment,” a work that highlights the innate impossibility of creating sustained tones on the instrument. Then, we continue our series of composer talks with two fellows from the Suncoast Composer Fellowship Program: Angela Elizabeth Slater and Zachary Konick. Plus, we’ll hear their music, including a work for winds and strings, and another for hammered dulcimer.
  • On this week’s Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Thomas Dorsey’s hymn, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” provides the musical backbone to Brittany J. Green’s piece “Lead Me Home.” It is music that draws on material from the hymn, gradually unraveling from an ethereal sustained soundscape into a gently bubbling texture. And we’re kicking off a series of interviews with fellows from the inaugural Suncoast Composer Fellowship Program! We’ll hear from artistic director Max Tan and composer mentor Sean Friar to learn more about this new program, then Tyler will speak with composers Chris Neiner and Yangfan Xu about their experiences there, their music, and their careers.
  • On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: November is here… the twilight of the year… with nature retreating, and the sunlight growing shorter and more golden. On the next Modern Notebook, we will venture through dusky music titled “Twill by Twilight,” by Toru Takemitsu - a work composed as an elegy for Morton Feldman. Then, in the traditional Sioux Tribe, Lakota warriors would write their own songs immediately after winning battles: songs that recounted their victories, or made in honor of a fallen warrior. I’m Tyler Kline, and on this week’s Modern Notebook we’ll hear a work by Jerod Impichchaahaaha Tate titled “Victory Songs,” inspired by a collection of stories by Native American writer Charles Alexander Eastman.
  • On this week’s Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: we’ll be getting a little spooky with a program right in time for Halloween! I’ll be sharing a works inspired by “nightmare fuel,” mythical beasts, and imaginary images; a trio by Jennifer Higdon that takes us into a “Dark Wood;” and this work by Shuying Li, “The Last Hivemind,” inspired by an episode of the horror series Black Mirror. Also featuring works works like Missy Mazzoli’s “Hail, Horrors, Hail;” music for saxophone and orchestra by Lei Liang inspired by a real life ghost story; and clarinetist Andy Hudson performs music by Rosśa Crean based on a wordless horror graphic novel by Thomas Ott.
