Polk County saw one of the greatest bicycle racers ever continue his successful transition to the world of triathlons, as Lance Armstrong won the Ironman 70.3 Florida race in Lake Eva Park in Haines City Sunday.
The seven time Tour de France winner posted his first win in four races this year with a time of 3:45:38, ten minutes ahead of second place finisher David Kahn.
At a post-race press conference, Ironman.com says Armstrong spoke highly of his return to the Sunshine State.
I don’t know, maybe Florida is good – the last time I won was 22 years ago in Florida. The sport of cycling borrowed me for a few decades, but now I’ve come back to my roots, as they say. This got a response from the crowd: “Welcome back!”
This year's Ironman 70.3 (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike course, 13.1 mile run) moved to Polk County after being held for a number of years at Walt Disney World Resort.
