Ireland Nugent, the 2-year-old Palm Harbor girl who had both of her legs severed at mid-calf in an accident last month has been released from the hospital.
The Tampa Bay Times reports she went home from Tampa General Hospital Saturday. She had undergone seven surgeries and three skin grafts since her father accidentally ran her legs over with a riding lawn mower on April 11.
"I'm excited and scared. It's really unknown territory for us," Jerry Nugent, her father, said as he loaded the family's Honda Odyssey minivan at the hospital's back entrance. Behind him trailed a red Radio Flyer wagon loaded high with gifts and clothes. "She's already really starting to scoot," he said, fretting aloud about how they would keep Ireland from crawling off the bed and hurting herself once she was home.
Earlier this week, the Times reported that if Ireland Nugent's recovery continues successfully, she could receive prosthetic legs in three to six weeks. Two funds for her medical care have been set up by Clearwater's Trinity Presbyterian Church and her father's employer, Pinellas County.
