StoryCorps Tampa Bay: A St. Pete Pioneer and Her Politician Son

StoryCorps

StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 50,000 interviews from more than 80,000 participants, and this past January, StoryCorps spent a month in St. Petersburg recording the stories from your Tampa Bay friends and neighbors.

We're proud to bring you StoryCorps Tampa Bay every Monday at 8:35 a.m. during Morning Edition and at 5:44 p.m. during All Things Considered.

In our debut installment, Frank Peterman Jr. talks with his son, Taffery, about Frank’s mother, Peggy Peterman. Peggy was a groundbreaking journalist at The St. Petersburg Times, writing about race and civil rights. She also made some fascinating friends during her career. Peterman tells his son how Peggy’s influence helped him eventually become a state representative – one who championed causes similar to his mother’s.

Mark Schreiner is the assistant news director and intern coordinator for WUSF News.
