Audi Takes the Driverless Car of the Future To the Selmon Expressway

grind365.com

The car that drives itself. That sci-fi fantasy will be coming to life this weekend, as Audi will be test driving its automated car on the Leroy Selmon Expressway in Tampa.

The Selmon Expressway is one of the few state-approved testing spots in America for driverless cars.
Brad Stertz, Communications Manager for Audi, says Audi is the first to demo to the public the functions of a highly autonomous car.

"We feel that this technology is going to be ready within 5 years, the real question that we have and one of the reasons why we wanted to come to Florida is there is not a whole lot of consistency with the laws across the country and we feel that their is a risk that the technology could arrive before the laws on how these systems are used day in and day out," Stertz said. "Florida has been very progressive in the laws that it has passed to unlock this technology and help it evolve further."

The Lee Roy Selmon express lanes will be closed on Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Monday from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
