What started out as a radio play has morphed into something much bigger. Now The Intergalactic Nemesis is coming to Sarasota's Ringling International Arts Festival Thursday. And it's bringing the sludge monsters from the planet Zygon to invade the 1930's.

Jason Neulander founded the Salvage Vanguard Theatre in Austin, Texas and his friend Roy Colgin cooked up an idea.
"He approached me about creating a sci-fi radio play that would be recorded and performed in the coffee house he worked in," Neulander said. "I just thought that sounded like a ton of fun. I was seven years old when Star Wars came out and 11 when Raiders of the Lost Ark came out, so that kind of storytelling appealed to my inner kid and still very much does."
That "sci-fi radio play" has turned into an amalgam of graphic novel, radio play, sci-fi adventure on stage. Chris Troska of the Ringling said Dwight Curry, who curated the Ringling International Arts Festival, wanted to bring the show as a sort of easy entry point for people who might not otherwise come to performance art.
Intergalactic Nemesis opens Thursday in the Mertz Theatre at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota.
