Paula Poundstone has been finding the humor in everyday life at least since kindergarten. That's when her teacher Mrs. Bump noted in a summary letter sent home to her parents, in lieu of a report card: "I have enjoyed Paula's humorous comments about our activities."
A copy of that letter lived near the doorway Poundstone would walk through to get to the set of her short-lived TV show.
Poundstone seems to be about relationships. The first words out of her mouth during a phone conversation were about the German shepherd mix dogs she has at home and how they spend time providing therapy to not only the residents of a local nursing home, but also to their families who come to visit. The dogs themselves seem shell-shocked by life.
She talked about her son, her daughter and the family struggles with technology. She said schools are getting it wrong when they push the use of computers for learning, because in her words, "students should be having conversations with their teachers."
Poundstone called the audience her best friend. Because she said no matter how weighed down by life she or they might be, they always lift her spirits. The comedienne, who is a regular on the popular NPR radio show, "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me," is coming to the Van Wezel in Sarasota Sunday night (4/17) to perform.
