Charitable Sisters Bless Pride Celebrations

Daylina Miller/WUSF News
Sister Muffy and Sister Agatha Frisky, members of the Perpetual Sisters of Indulgence, tout themselves as "nuns of the gay, lesbian and supportive communities."

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence of Tampa Bay will be participating in St. Petersburg Pride this weekend. The drag queens call themselves the "nuns of the gay, lesbian and supportive communities” and use entertainment to affirm people for who they are.

WUSF’s Lisa Peakes talks to two members– Sisters Agatha Frisky and Muffy - of the non-profit, whose chapter started in 2008 at St. Pete Pride. The original group was founded in San Francisco in 1979.

After more than 40 years learning and helping others understand more about so many aspects of our world and living in it, I still love making connections between national news stories and our community. It's exciting when I can find a thread between a national program or greater premise and what is happening at the local or personal level. This has been true whether I’ve spun the novelty tunes of Raymond Scott or Wilmoth Houdini from a tiny outpost in a Vermont field, or shared the voices of incarcerated women about what it’s like to be behind bars on Mother’s Day with the entire state of New Hampshire.
I took my first photography class when I was 11. My stepmom begged a local group to let me into the adults-only class, and armed with a 35 mm disposable camera, I started my journey toward multimedia journalism.
