USF President Judy Genshaft has named William Hogarth as interim regional chancellor of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and appointed Frank A. Biafora, dean of the USFSP College of Arts and Sciences, to lead a search committee for a new regional chancellor.

Hogarth, currently director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography, will assume duties at USFSP on Aug. 6 while continuing his leadership of the marine science consortium. A national search is underway for a new regional chancellor following the resignation of USFSP Regional Chancellor Margaret Sullivan.

Hogarth served as Dean of USF’s College of Marine Science from 2007 to 2010 and has been FIO’s director since 2011. Hogarth is also the former director of the National Marine Fisheries Service and served as chairman of the International Whaling Commission and the high-profile International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas. Hogarth holds bachelors and master’s degrees from the University of Richmond in Virginia and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University.

“Bill Hogarth is the right choice to lead USF St. Petersburg while we search for the best and most capable individual as a permanent regional chancellor,” Genshaft said in a prepared statement.  “Bill is a respected administrator who has cultivated deep relationships within the community and who will keep USFSP moving forward on its path to excellence. He knows the institution and the community, he understands the USF System and he is committed to the success of our students.”
