Dr. Ken Atwater, president of Hillsborough Community College, has taken on a new leadership role as next chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Colleges.
After being elected as the president of HCC in 2010, Atwater has taken his role to the national level.
The American Association of Community Colleges was started in 1920 when a group of presidents of various junior colleges got together to serve as a national "voice".
Atwater has been involved within the American Association of Community Colleges for over 20 years as a council member and now an acting board member. He expresses his thoughts on his newest position.
"First of all, I'm extremely proud that my peers would think that my experience and expertise would allow me to hold such a position," said Atwater, "and truly it's a position of basically trying to represent Americas' community colleges and advocate on their behalf and help set the national agendas."
Atwater says that along with his fellow board members he looks forward to "reinventing" America's community colleges.
