Buckhorn Struggles with Decision to Fire Elia

M. S. Butler

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn weighed in on the firing of Hillsborough County School Superintendent Mary Ellen Elia on Wednesday.

Following Gov. Rick Scott's press conference about his education plan, Mayor Buckhorn spoke with reporters and questioned the School Board's  4-3 decision on Tuesday to let Elia go and buy out the remainder of her contract.

"I think the way this happened is going to make it hard for any serious candidate around the country who looks to come here to work in that environment. They're going to have to think long and hard about it. And that is unfortunate."

The Tampa mayor added he would still do whatever is needed to aid in the search for Elia's replacement.

"To the extent that I can be helpful, the drama not withstanding, I will do that. I will go anywhere, talk to anybody about coming here, but after last night, that may be a challenge," said Buckhorn.
