Brice Hayes searches the hallways and classrooms at Charles S. Rushe Middle School for an active shooter.

A Pasco County deputy tells him how to point his gun and scan the rooms. Suddenly he finds the shooter in a classroom and opens fire.

Hayes was one of the trainees at an active shooter training for new school safety guards held Friday by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

Pasco deputies will train more than 50 new hires over the next few weeks. The safety guards will be employees of the school district and stationed in Pasco's 49 elementary schools. The county's middle and high schools will continue to have school resource officers.

Cynthia Armstrong, a Pasco County School Board member, said the new hires were narrowed down from a much larger group.

“We had over twice as many applicants apply as we actually hired so we were really pleased with the pool of applicants we had to choose from,” Armstrong said.
