The senior scientist at the National Wildlife Federation, Dr. Doug Inkley, says what surprised him the most in the wake of the huge spill in the Gulf of Mexico two years ago was the secrecy.
"Maybe I was naive but I really but I really did not expect the extreme degree of secrecy both the industry and the government put in place which was keeping information from being released to the general public... Why is it that you can't allow a reporter to go in and film and look at the pelicans that are being cleaned of oil?"
Inkley says he has had to file a Freedom of Information request to learn the number of dolphins that have died in the Gulf since the spill. The number is up substantially.
He also requested the dolphins' autopsies, but that information was denied because it's is tied up in legal battles.
