There's a public meeting tonight in St. Petersburg about the restoration process of the gulf after the BP oil spill. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission are hosting it.
After the devastation from the oil spill in 2010, congress passed the RESTORE Act which created a restoration council. It has created a draft comprehension plan for the kinds of ecosystem restoration projects that will be funded by the council.
Jonathan Webber is with Audubon Florida who will be at the meeting. "We're looking specifically to make the gulf coast whole again," he said.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for gulf coast residents and gulf coast economies to rebound after years of degradation in our area. The golf coast is very special, it's a driver of our economy in the state of Florida and we'd love to see the golf coast whole again."
The meeting is at 5:30 P.M. at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Research Institute in St. Petersburg.
The council will have a final plan done by August.
