Volunteers will be at coastal areas around the Tampa Bay area Saturday morning as part of an effort to clean up litter that poses a threat to both humans and animals.
People's leftovers, water bottles and plastic bags near the coast not only pose a threat to public safety, but also to animals sea life. Many places around the Tampa Bay area are hosting a coastal cleanup on Saturday morning, including Pasco County and the Hillsborough River.
One of the areas filling up with floating debris is the Sand Key Bridge area in Clearwater. Fishermen who enjoy the area sometimes leave lures, hooks and fishing line that threaten animals lives.
Sarah Josuns, Environmental Specialist of the City of Clearwater, said people are surprised to see how easy it is to clean up an area.
"Having a group of people there for a couple of hours and it comes out clean, is rewarding, when you see that just that little bit of effort from a few people can make a big difference," she said.
Josuns said closed-toed shoes, light-weight clothes, sunscreen and a pair of gloves are all you need to be part of the coastal cleanup in Clearwater.
The cleanup is open to all ages and starts at 9 a.m. Water, tools and cleaning supplies will be provided.
