Less than two months after USF Health opened the doors on its Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), one of its creators is leaving to become Florida's Surgeon General.
CAMLS chief medical officer Dr. John Armstrong has also been named Secretary of the Florida Department of Health.
In a Department of Health press release announcing the move, Governor Rick Scott praised Armstrong.
“Dr. Armstrong is recognized as a national expert in medical team training and public health preparedness for disasters, and his leadership will be a great asset to the citizens of Florida,” said Governor Rick Scott. “As an outstanding trauma surgeon, public health professional, educator and military veteran, he will be a great addition to my executive leadership team.”
Dr. Armstrong joined USF Health last year and helped launch CAMLS, a 38 million dollar training center for healthcare professionals from around the world.
While USF Health officials search for his replacement, Armstrong will continue helping CAMLS develop its military medicine and simulation of battlefield surgery programs, which WUSF's University Beat looked at last year.
