rt.com

A statewide human trafficking summit focusing on labor and sex trafficking will take place Thursday at the University of South Florida.

The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and the Interagency Human Trafficking Work Group is hosting the summit.

Invitees include advocates, law enforcement, members of the medical community, as well as the legal community.

Meghan Speakes, communications director for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, says they want to teach people what to look for when it comes to human trafficking

“A lot of times it is not what you would expect, and so we want to make sure that the people who are in the community, and who may be encountering children or adults who are currently victims or being victimized by human traffickers that they know the signs that they can alert the proper authorities,” Speakes said.

The summit starts at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Marshall Student Center at the USF. A live webcast will be available online.
