Saturday was the Drug Enforcement Administration's National "Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative."
Local law enforcement agencies likes the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office and the Tampa Police Department collected unused prescription pills at various locations. The goal was to keep those medicines from getting into the wrong hands.
At a Winn-Dixie along North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, Eleanor Skillman dropped off pills that belonged to her husband. She said she's wanted to get rid of them for a while and this offered her an opportunity to do so.
"I just didn't want them around my house anymore," Skillman said. "I think if anyone knew about them, I could be robbed, possibly or something. I don't know."
Kacie Washburn with the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance said Skillman brought in four boxes of Fentanyl - a dangerous opiod.
"[People who make drugs] mix Fentanyl with heroin," she said. "That's one of the things they cut it with."
The public "Drug Take Back" happens once a year, but organizers say you can help year round. Just check with your local law enforcement agency.
