William Bolling of St. Petersburg is charged with the first-degree murder of his wife, Vicki Bolling and is being held in jail without bond.
Detectives said William Bolling shot his wife three times after having an argument with her on Tuesday. She died that night.
But the victim's death didn't come as a surprise to her sons.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, John and Michael Stevenson knew their step-father would harm their mother one day.
Vicki Bolling's sons said their mother underwent physical and emotional abuse along with threats and intimidation for more than thirty years of her marriage.
John Stevenson told the newspaper he tried to warn his mother.
"She was the only person in this world who could love a monster," John Stevenson said. "I tried to tell her for years, to tell her that this man is going to shoot you, he's going to kill you, he's going murder you. She didn't believe it. "She always said: 'I took my wedding vows to God. I swore for better or worse. It was the luck of the draw that I got worse. ' "
