Friday's massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut has local officials on alert today.
After 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary School, officials in Hillsborough County are putting more law enforcement officers in elementary schools. Most elementary schools don't have a resource officer on campus like middle and high schools do. But deputies will be around this week.
Sgt. Christie Esquinaldo with the Hillsborough Sheriff's Department says it's both for physical safety and psychological comfort.
"This week we just wanted to add a presence of uniformed deputies there," she says. "Also we have non-uniformed deputies who drive unmarked cars who are also assigned to go and drive around the school, make contact with the schools, just to ease the students' minds and the parent's minds," she says.
The added presence of deputies will be around until students go off to winter break next week.
