Law Enforcement Officers At Elementary Schools Until End of School Year

The massacre last month at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school has schools countrywide heightening their security. And that includes Hillsborough County.

Law enforcement officers were present at all schools before students left for winter break and now they are staying until the end of the school year.

When schools open on Monday, deputies and officers will be at every public elementary school.

Tampa Police will have officers present when the school day starts and when it ends.

Deputies from the sheriff's department will also be present at about 150 elementary schools including some charter elementary schools.

Lieutenant Chad Chronister says the extra deputies come with a heavy price tag.

"It's quite monumental, we figured it out because our sheriffs made a commitment to cover the school for the remainder of the school year, and it's going to come out to about $1.9 million," he says.

The money will come from the sheriff's department's existing budget.
