Investigators in Hillsborough County have a mystery on their hands: who shot and killed a man driving on Interstate 4 over the weekend?
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says 47-year-old Fred William Turner, Jr. of Orlando called 911 Saturday afternoon to report that someone was following him and waving a gun.
The Tampa Bay Times reports Turner told dispatchers he did not provoke the man, who was driving either a silver or gray Ford Taurus.
Turner said the man followed him onto the interstate from near North 50th Street and East Columbus Drive shortly after Turner left a store. Authorities are not releasing the name of the store or saying if that's where Turner first encountered him.
Turner was still on his cell phone as he approached the Interstate 75 overpass and the dispatcher heard shots ring out. Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said Turner pulled his green Ford Mustang over near the overpass and died about 3 p.m. The shooting led Highway Patrol troopers to close the highway for several hours as authorities scoured the area for evidence.
The Times also reports the investigation is being handled by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Tampa Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol since the chase and shooting crossed all three jurisdictions. Officials don't believe traffic-monitoring cameras show any pertinent information, and are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay toll-free at 1-800-873-8477.
