Florida's Sexual Violence on Campus Report

Alex Garland —Demotix/Corbis

Every year colleges and universities that receive federal financial aid must file a report of all crimes committed on campus to the Department of Education.

Based on the Department of Education figures, the University of Florida (UF), the University of Central Florida (UCF) and the University of South Florida (USF) are the  universities in the state with the highest numbers of sexual assaults reported.

Nanci Newton, director of the USF Center of Victim Advocacy and Violence Prevention said these universities have higher reports because they have more students than smaller universities.

"I think that as there is more and more publicity regarding this, and more and more schools follow the federal mandates, we are going to see an increase in reported cases." Newton said.

Critics say there are far more campus rapes than are currently being reported.
