As the University of South Florida football team celebrated its third straight victory, another of its players was arrested early Sunday morning - the third this month.
According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office report, Deangelo Antoine, 19, was arrested early Sunday morning on the Tampa campus and charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance.
Antoine, a freshman wide receiver, did not play in USF's 38-14 victory over Southern Methodist University Saturday.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, University Police pulled Antoine over shortly after midnight and then searched the vehicle after detecting the smell of marijuana.
None was found, but a couple of tablets of Xanax -- for which Antoine had no prescription -- were discovered. The possession charge is a third-degree felony.
Antoine was released on $2,000 bond. He has since been suspended from the football team. According to a press release from USF Athletics:
USF Athletics is aware of the arrest of student-athlete Deangelo Antoine. Antoine has been immediately suspended from all team activities as we continue to gather more information and work with the proper authorities.
Backup offensive lineman Benjamin Knox and cornerback Lamar Robbins were arrested earlier this month after allegedly firing a gun on campus, striking a residence hall. Both players were suspended.
In September, former USF football player Elkino Watson was stabbed to death and current student Desmond Horne was injured in an incident outside an Ybor City nightclub. Randolph Graham, 23, faces second-degree murder charges.
