UPDATED 3/27 at 2 P.M.

A Tampa police officer was shot and two men were killed during a shootout Saturday afternoon.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 4 p.m. Saturday, that said two men were fighting at a Sunoco gasoline station, police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.

The caller followed the men to a nearby Hyatt hotel parking lot, near North 30th Street and East 109th Street, near the Busch Gardens theme park and south of the University of South Florida campus.

Tampa Police said Sunday that one man, Edward Leroy King, 51, had been shot before officers arrived at the scene.  Then, Patrick Matthew McManamon, 46, opened fire, hitting officer Jose Rodriguez once.

Rodriguez, 53, and another officer returned fire and struck McManamon, police reports show.

McManamon was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Rodriguez, who has been with the Tampa Police for 13 years, was in stable condition at Tampa General Hospital Sunday with undisclosed injuries. Davis said Rodriguez was apparently saved because he wearing body armor and a bullet-resistant vest.
