Many local schools and government offices are shut down today because of Tropical Storm Hermine. But Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is taking a different tack - he expanded hours at the city parks and recreation centers.

“We’re going to keep our parks and recreation centers open during the day, which we don’t normally, to accommodate those parents who have to work whose kids will not be in school,” Buckhorn said, “But (they) need some place safe and not just hanging around the house or out on the street.”

The Tampa centers will be open to city residents  including kids and seniors from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those recreation facilities will include Barksdale Active Adult Center.

You can find the nearest center here, or call 813-274-8615 for more information.
