Fire officials say a woman jumped with one of her children from the balcony of their second story apartment to escape a fire near the University of South Florida.
The fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon and took firefighters an hour to get under control. Local news outlets report the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
In a news release, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. Two dogs also died in the fire that displaced about 20 people from their apartments.
Officials say the fire started on a stove in a first floor unit at Cordova Apartments. A resident told investigators he left the room while he was cooking french fries. When he returned the kitchen was on fire.
