Hillsborough PTC Comes To A Dead End

from Creative Commons

A bill to dissolve the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission passed the Florida Legislature and is awaiting the signature of Gov. Rick Scott.

The PTC has faced criticism for trying to regulate ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. If Scott signs the bill, the agency will be officially dissolved Dec. 31.

Hillsborough County Tax Collector Doug Belden says his office already grants permits, registers vehicles and conducts driver background checks and is ready to take over some of the responsibilities of the agency.

"We think that we can take control of this and do it well, and do it faster, better and cheaper than anybody else can,” Belden said.

The Tax Collector’s office will share the duties of the PTC with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

“I’ve always promoted agencies working together,” Belden explained.
