Immigration Legislation Stalls In Florida Senate

A contentious bill that calls for a crackdown on cities and counties that don't comply with federal immigration authorities is running into trouble in the Florida Senate. The Florida House has already passed a version of the bill that is a top priority of House Speaker Richard Corcoran. Corcoran, who is expected to run for governor, has started running a television ad touting the bill.
But Sen. Aaron Bean, a Fernandina Beach Republican, was forced to postpone a vote on his version (SB 308) after it became clear he lacked the votes to pass it through the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Bean's bill would strictly ban "sanctuary city" policies and penalize local officials for upholding them. A handful of Florida counties have been criticized for being non-cooperative with federal immigration officials.
