Florida's cities and counties wouldn't be able to completely choose when they hold local elections under a bill passed by the Florida House. The bill passed on a 70-45 vote on Wednesday despite opponents who said local government should be able to decide what days are best for their elections.
Proponents said the measure would boost participation in local elections by having cities vote on the same day across the state.
Local governments could choose to hold their elections either on the same day as the statewide general election every two years, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in odd-numbered years or on the third Thursday in March.
A similar Senate bill has two more committee stops before being heard by the full chamber.
