MacDill F/A-18 Hornet Training Could Produce Sonic Booms In South Tampa

Training on the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet aircraft will take place at MacDill Air Force Base through Oct. 19. WIKIPEDIA

There’s a reason it could be unusually noisy in South Tampa over the next three weeks.

And we’re not talking just a few more jets in the air. We’re talking sonic booms.

That’s because, according to the U.S. Navy, training on the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet aircraft will take place at MacDill Air Force Base through Oct. 19.

Residents will hear the increased air traffic starting today. The F/A-18 can fly faster than the speed of sound, so expect some sonic booms.

The training will occur between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., according to the Navy.
