The National Hurricane Center says there’s a 30 percent chance that a tropical wave approaching South Florida from the east will develop once it reaches the Gulf later this week.
Florida Public Radio Emergency Network meteorologist Ray Hawthorne says an increase in heavy showers is likely to be the greatest effect as the wave passes today and Wednesday.
“I’m expecting 1 to 3 inches of rain over South Florida and the Keys as the wave approaches, and a general increase in afternoon thunderstorm activity over the rest of the state today and Wednesday,” Hawthorne said. “The system has a better chance of developing as it heads toward Louisiana or Texas later this week.”
The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring a second tropical wave midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles.
It gives the wave a 40% chance of developing over the next few days before conditions become unfavorable for further strengthening this weekend.
