As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the formation of a Task Force on the Safe and Limited Re-Opening of Long-Term Care Facilities in Florida.

DeSantis says the task force will develop guidelines on how to safely allow family members to visit their loved ones in Florida’s long-term care facilities, where visitation has been prohibited since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We discussed this with Marty Goetz, CEO of River Garden Senior Services; Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious disease specialist at FIU’s College of Medicine; and Mary Daniel, a task force member who was invited to join after she took a dishwashing job in a long-term care facility where her husband is a resident in order to see him.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s COVID-19 Experience

Several people have tested positive for COVID-19 after a two-day meeting of the Florida Sheriffs Association in Bonita Springs, which was also attended by Gov. DeSantis and other state officials. One of them was Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who recounted his experience with COVID-19 for us.
