The average premium will increase by 6.6% for most homeowners across the state, while Gov. Ron DeSantis says residents in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will see a decrease.

In a concept known as “decoupling,” the proposal would erase a requirement that horse tracks hold live horse racing to be able to operate other types of gambling. It would apply to Gulfstream Park, too.

The Florida Public Service Commission approved the rate hikes as they look to recover costs related to last year's hurricanes.

Staff members of the Florida Public Service Commission recommended proposals that would add about $21 a month for Duke customers and $30 for TECO customers starting in March.

Several bills were filed one day before the Florida Legislature was scheduled to meet, mainly focused on immigration.

House meetings that had been scheduled Wednesday and Thursday will be shifted to Jan. 28 and Jan. 29 “with some slight adjustments.”

Among the restrictions are preventing minors from beginning to receive puberty blockers and hormone therapy for treatment of gender dysphoria.

Warren was suspended as Hillsborough state attorney by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022 and lost in his bid for reelection in November.

The dispute centers on part of the rule preventing states from cutting off coverage for non-payment of premiums after children have been found eligible for the program. Eligibility is determined each year, so the state contends the rule could lead to coverage being provided for months without premiums being paid.

A lobbyist hopes it will be considered during this year’s legislative session starting in March.
