About 300 people saw a glimpse of a possible new home for the Tampa Bay Rays today. It's called "Rays Park at Carillon."
The development firm CityScape made a presentation to the St. Petersburg City Council showing a stadium in the Carillon area -- which is now a business park.
The stadium would either have a retractable roof or one made out of window panes and would be air-conditioned. Capacity? 35,000. Price... somewhere around $570 million. Where will the money come from? Stay tuned...
The Rays have been saying for a while now that Tropicana Field - which they are committed to until 2027 - just isn't going to cut it over the long run.
St. Petersburg officials said they would likely sue if the team tries to look outside the city. Council members were advised not to ask questions at the meeting because the city's attorney warned them the Rays might try to exploit any statements made to get out of the stadium contract.
