The Florida ACLU today released its mid-term report on the administration of Gov. Rick Scott. The ACLU has filed an unprecedented eleven lawsuits challenging laws coming from Gov. Scott and the state legislature. They've targeted laws ranging from the suppression of early voting to drug testing of state employees and welfare recipients.
Howard Simon is the group's executive director.
"I think it is a wide-ranging, extensive assault on civil liberties," he says, "and I think it's extraordinary and noteworthy - and I have to say with some sadness - that the role of the ACLU in the last two years has been to defend Floridians from the assault on their rights by the legislature and the governor."
The Republican Party of Florida retorted in an email that the ACLU lost three of those lawsuits - calling them "frivolous" - and prevailed on a single provision of three other cases. Several other cases are still pending.
