The fourth annual USF Veterans Day Ceremony came with some good news for women veterans in Florida.

Mike Prendergast, executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs, announced the appointment of Cynthia Brown to a newly-made position within the department, which will start in January.

"Just a few days away from Veterans Day, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that we got approval through the governor and the legislature, and then ultimately it passed and the governor signed it into law to hire a women veterans coordinator for the state of Florida, first time in our history to have a full-time, dedicated women veterans coordinator," Prendergast said.

There are 160,000 women veterans in Florida, and Prendergast said they are the fastest growing group of veterans.
