Long lines at voting booths and other irregularities during the 2012 election in Florida are well known. What's not so obvious is how to fix the problems.
So says the non-profit citizens lobbying group Common Cause. Common Cause says Florida has fixed most of the 19 problems the group identified during 2012 voting.
Report co-author Stephen Spaulding says Florida was one of the states that immediately made changes.
"Their Web sites were updated. That's something that they did very quickly," he said. "That was a recommendation, they made the materials and improved their military and oversea voters pages, FAQs, etc. They updated that when it was brought to their attention."
Still, he says Florida needs to do more.
The report says Florida still needs to work on their online voter registration, interstate exchanges of voter information, consider or adopt legislation establishing vote centers and test all election materials for plain language. It also says, unlike many states, Florida has increased opportunities for voting before Election Day, an improvement after citizens waited an average of 45 minutes in line in 2012.
