A Conversation With Andrew Gillum

Former Vice President Joe Biden campaigned Monday for fellow Democrats Andrew Gillum and Bill Nelson at the University of South Florida recreation center in Tampa.

He was there to get out the vote for Nelson, the incumbent U.S. Senator fighting for re-election against Gov. Rick Scott; and Gillum, the Tallahassee mayor who is facing Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis at the polls Nov. 6.

WUSF's Steve Newborn caught up with Gillum before his appearance. He talked about how the state could fight climate change and rising sea levels, how he would work for mass transit if he gets elected, and his chances during the upcoming election.

"I feel all the energy in the world," Gillum said. "I feel the wind at our backs. I believe we're going to flip this state for the first time in 20 years. And then the hard part begins - and that's the process of governing."

WUSF has extended a similar invitation for an interview with Ron DeSantis.

Steve Newborn is a WUSF reporter and producer at WUSF covering environmental issues and politics in the Tampa Bay area.
