At Florida Bee Farm in Clearwater, Explore the Secret Life of Bees

Put on your beekeeper suit and come see what's involved in maintaining a thriving apiary.

Florida Bee Farm in Clearwater exemplifies the growing popularity of urban beekeeping. TRACEY IN SUNSHINE CITY

The Zest podcast contributor Tracey Johnson visited Florida Bee Farm in Clearwater, where owner Jim Quinlan is running what calls a mini eco-farm. On his 10 acres in the heart of a residential subdivision, Jim keeps around a dozen hives. He also grows bee-friendly flowers and sells jar of his honey on the honor system. Tracey says there were so many bees landing on her suit at one point it felt like she was standing in a rainstorm.

Tracey's blog is called Tracey in Sunshine City.  You can see more honey bee stories at wusf.org/honeybees. And save the date for The Zest's honey bee event at Sweetwater Organic Community Farm in Tampa on Sunday, Nov. 10.
