'The Fish Were Going to Bite Me': Local Leaders Recall Their Very First Jobs

As Labor Day approaches, we're taking a look at the local labor market on this week's Florida Matters.

Of course, no matter what line of work you’re in, it all starts with landing that very first job.

Before Richard Gonzmart became the fourth-generation owner/operator of Columbia Restaurant Group, he had to learn the ins and outs of identifying fresh fish. When Sarasota Mayor Shannon Synder was 12 years old, he started a lawn care business. And long before she was CEO of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Judy Lisi waited tables for 33 cents an hour.

The three offer recollections and encouragement for job seekers.
