Florida Matters Preview: LGBT Issues

This week on Florida Matters, we’re looking at the latest policy debates surrounding gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.

That includes President Trump’s decision to rescind Obama administration guidelines that allowed public school students to use the restroom corresponding with their gender identity. That topic has been the subject of ongoing debate in Sarasota County Schools.

In this preview, Florida Matters host Carson cooper asks Nathan Bruemmer with TransAction Florida, Bridget Ziegler with the Sarasota School Board and Mark Puskarich with Equality Florida if they think issues like this affecting the LGBT community should be handled by federal or local governments.

I cover health care for WUSF and the statewide journalism collaborative Health News Florida. I’m passionate about highlighting community efforts to improve the quality of care in our state and make it more accessible to all Floridians. I’m also committed to holding those in power accountable when they fail to prioritize the health needs of the people they serve.
Carson Cooper served as host of WUSF’s "Morning Edition" for 18 years. He took the job in 2000, after working in Tampa Bay radio for decades. He was a fan favorite of our listeners, bringing his friendly and familiar voice to listeners as they started their weekday mornings.
