Florida Matters: Bus Rapid Transit In Tampa Bay

JACOBS ENGINEERING

Taxpayers in Tampa Bay have never given the “green light” to a transit rail system, but maybe fast, cheap buses will prove more popular.

This week on Florida Matters we’re talking about the proposed 41-mile regional bus rapid transit system that would connect St. Petersburg, Tampa and Wesley Chapel along Interstate 275.

Our guests include:

Brad Miller, CEO of Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA).

Dennis Hinebaugh, Program Director for Transit Research at USF’s Center for Urban Transportation Research and Director of CUTR’s National Bus Rapid Transit Institute.

Sharon Calvert, co-founder of the Hillsborough County Tea Party and a longtime critic of expensive transit projects.

We also hear a report on bus rapid transit from WUSF’s Steve Newborn and feature comments from listeners who submitted their feedback about transportation in Tampa Bay.

Special thanks to all who shared their thoughts about transit with us both on and off the air. You can continue the conversation on our Facebook page, tweet @FloridaMatters or email FloridaMatters@wusf.org.

Hear our panelists further discuss BRT on our podcast Florida Matters More.
