President Trump's legal team opened its response to the Democrats' allegations with a rare Saturday session that said the accusers' facts were wrong and Trump must preserve his office.

On Thursday, House Democrats outlined how the law applies to what they see as the president's "corrupt scheme" with Ukraine to tilt the 2020 election in his favor.

Lead impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., called on senators to "decide what kind of democracy you believe we ought to be." Trump, meanwhile, called the case against him a "hoax."

House managers called for impeachment and attorneys for President Trump declared the articles of impeachment "ridiculous."

The Senate majority leader is now planning for each side in the impeachment trial to have 24 hours to present their case, spread over three days.

The lawmakers hand-delivered the articles after a party-line House vote. The process is now fully with the Senate, which is expected to begin its trial next week.

Although the atmosphere during the Clinton trial differs from today's, Roberts is likely to follow the precedent set by the man he once clerked for and play a limited role.

Lawmakers took to the House floor in roughly six hours of debate Wednesday before passing two articles of impeachment against the president.

"You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish personal, political, and partisan gain," Trump wrote in a six-page letter.

Despite weeks of public hearings, views on impeachment haven't budged, according to the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll. "It's like the hearings have never happened," pollster Lee Miringoff said.

The full House is expected to approve two articles of impeachment against the president. The GOP-led Senate is already making plans for what leaders hope will be a quick trial in January.

After an abrupt end to a contentious day of debate, the panel reconvened Friday morning to pass the articles on party-line votes. The full House of Representatives is expected to vote next week.
