Amid the echo of hoofbeats and the sway of lassos, history galloped to life as the Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center in Gainesville honored the unsung heroes who shaped the frontier of the American West.

The museum which will teach visitors about the history and accomplishments of Black Americans in Florida was created by a 2023 law. Sarasota remains under consideration.

The other potential sites include Jackson County, Opa-locka, Seminole County, St. John’s County, and Eatonville, the oldest Black-incorporated municipality in Florida.

The school district has sent a letter of intent to donate 10 acres of land from the former Hungerford site to the museum.

Experts say these cemeteries -- located across the country, including Florida -- tell the story of bygone days that capture the richness of the Black experience. And families say it's essential to be able to pay their respects and connect with ancestors there.

While there's never been a Black Strawberry Queen, many women have worked to change that — for the festival as well as the city's Black history.
