Cold Weather Shelters

Hillsborough County's homeless and community services director said that's putting a strain on volunteers who are coming back every night while managing their own lives.

Shelters began opening over the weekend and are expected to remain open through later in the week.

The IFAS extension office has a "Florida Friendly Landscaping Guide" that shows which plants can survive the upcoming weather conditions, and which need extra protection.

They opened Monday night as a cold front brings feels-like temperatures below 40 degrees.

Shelters are opening in Hillsborough, Sarasota, and Citrus counties.
