In a 4-1 vote, the Manatee County School Board elected Jason Wysong as the new superintendent for the district.

The Manatee County School District will replace Cynthia Saunders, who is retiring in June.

The starting pay for teachers increases by $2,367, while the minimum wage for teachers' aides is now $15 an hour.

Superintendent Cynthia Saunders reached a settlement earlier this month with the state.

Saunders will pay a $2,000 fine to the Education Practices Commission, have a letter of reprimand placed in her file, and take courses on ethics.

The vote won't affect the current school year, since it comes a day after students' last day of class, but would make masks optional at graduation and summer school.
